Tremploy has launched a $1-million capital campaign to help build a new $9.5-million training centre to offer vocational training and support for Islanders with intellectual disabilities.

A sod-turning event marked the official launch of the effort to build the new centre on Regis Duffy Drive in the Bio Commons in Charlottetown.

It will offer clients access to green space and an extensive and accessible trail system in addition to the variety of services, including day programs, work experience, skill development, one-on-one support, employment assistance services and special events.

To kick off the fundraising campaign, P.E.I.’S Department of Social Development and Housing contributed $250,000. The federal government will spend more than $2.4 million on the project. Additionally, the provincial government will contribute more than $2.4 million towards the total eligible cost for the project, with Tremploy Inc. footing the balance.

Tremploy board chair Les Parsons said this is an exciting time as construction of a new facility is long overdue.

“Our new centre will better meet the needs of clients and their families, allowing us to expand our social enterprise and support more individuals on the waiting list for our services,” said Parsons in a news release.

Those interested in supporting the capital campaign can visit www.tremploy.com or call 902-892-5338. All donations will go directly to the new centre, and charitable tax receipts will be provided.
