Holland Hurricanes men’s team remains undefeated

Women's team picks up a win and a loss during ACAA play in Halifax

The Holland Hurricanes men's basketball team remained undefeated during a two-game road trip ,while the women's team split two games in Halifax in back-toback days of Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association basketball over the Nov. 27 weekend.

MEN

In the men's game against the MSVU Mystics on Nov. 27, the ‘Canes took a 21-16 lead after one quarter but trailed 45-43 at the half.

The ‘Canes fell further behind in the third, trailing 68-60 with a quarter to play, however a fourth-quarter turnaround gave the ‘Canes an 85-81 win.

Jashajaun Downey led all scorers with 21 points while adding five rebounds and two steals.

Jordan Holness had 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals in the win. Jalen Menzies and Tyray Cooper provided a scoring punch off the bench with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

On Nov. 28 against the UKC Blue Devils, the ‘Canes started strong, leading 21-14 after the first quarter and 42-30 at the half. They built the lead up to 20 in the fourth quarter before winning 84-73.

Downey once again led the team in scoring with 20 points with Bryce Corless providing a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Menzies added 19 points off the bench with Logan Rempel adding seven points and six rebounds.

WOMEN

In the Nov. 27 game versus MSVU, the ‘Canes fell behind to the Mystics 23-18 after one quarter and trailed 36-31 at the half after.

However, the ‘Canes rallied with an excellent third quarter and took a 49-45 lead into the fourth. The 'Canes were up a 69-63 with a minute left before allowing nine straight points to lose, 72-69.

Sheleese Hoilette led the ‘Canes offensively with 15 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists and four steals. Lisa Bolander recorded 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists, with Grace Bennett adding 13 points and five rebounds and Karla Benitez recording 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the loss.

Against UKC on Nov. 28, the ‘Canes jumped out to a 27-14 lead after a solid first quarter but saw the lead slowly shrink to 45-35 at the half and 72-67 after three. The ‘Canes found themselves behind 87-85 with just over two minutes remaining before ending the game on an 11-0 run for the 96-87 win.

Bolander recorded 20 points and 15 rebounds with Bennett leading the team in scoring with 27 points along with seven rebounds.
