Expanding services to better support Islanders

ATLANTIC BRIEFS DESK SW-BRIEFS@SALTWIRE.COM

The Alzheimer Society of P.E.I. is expanding its services to better support Prince Edward Islanders with Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

In a Nov. 22 release, the society said it is expanding services and creating new support service co-ordinator positions in O'Leary, Summerside and Montague with help from provincial funding.

Recently appointed society CEO Jaime Constable said with over 2,700 Islanders living with Alzheimer's or other dementia, the new roles will ensure affected people can receive care without being required to travel to Charlottetown.

Constable said a new dementia care educator has also been hired to travel across P.E.I. and provide special training to front-line care providers in settings like long-term care and community care.

One of Constable's priorities in the new role includes working with health and community care providers to increase early referral to services.
