An Ontario woman has committed to walking the circumference of P.E.I. to raise funds for mental health recovery on the Island.

Christine Renaud travelled from southern Ontario's Prince Edward County to take on the challenge of walking Prince Edward Island's

700 km Island Walk to raise $7,000 for the Lennon Recovery House.

“I wanted to do the walk, but I wanted to connect it with something worthwhile," she said in a phone interview on Sept. 10.

"My brother lives in P.E.I., and when I decided I would do a fundraiser, I started looking for charities and the Lennon House just spoke to me.”

Renaud is documenting her Island Walk journey on her personal blog, which connects readers to a link to the online fundraiser for the Lennon House.

As of Sept. 10, Renaud had raised nearly $4,000 of her $7,000 goal.

After working in vulnerable sectors much of her life and losing the father of her first child to drug addiction, Renaud was looking for a way to impact mental health recovery while incorporating her love of the arts.

“The donations will create a permanent art space at the Lennon House specializing in art therapy and sustained programming from visiting artists,” she said.

After arriving in P.E.I. on Sept. 2, Renaud began her journey Sept. 3 on the New Zealand Trailhead with plans of walking 20-25 kilometres a day to get around the Island by Sept. 30.
