TERRA NOVA, N.L. — Terra Nova National Park in Newfoundland and Labrador will soon open its annual moose population reduction program with plans to open one hunting zone for the 2021 season.

In a Sept. 22 release, Parks Canada officials said hunting zone 1 will open on Tuesday, Oct. 12, and includes most park areas with only six restricted areas, which can be found online.

The hunting zone is shared, meaning visitors and hunters are allowed in the park simultaneously, with hunting permitted until Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022.

Non-profit organizations can also apply to participate in the Terra Nova moose hunt for free.

However, applications must be sent in to Parks Canada officials by 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 1.

The program began in 2011 as an initiative to improve forest health that was being significantly impacted by the large mammals.

Hunters are asked to consider the benefits of selecting non-toxic, leadfree ammunition.

Parks Canada said that some hiking trails will be affected in different Terra Nova National Park areas during the moose reduction program this fall and winter.

Visitors should pay particular attention to signage that says where hunting is taking place.

Harvesters and other individuals planning to visit the park are encouraged to review maps and safety information on the Parks Canada website.
