P.E.I. farmers sending hay to Western Canadian farms in need

ATLANTIC BRIEFS DESK SW-BRIEFS @SALTWIRE.COM

Three containers of dry hay have been sent from P.E.I. to help farmers struggling to feed their animals in Western Canada due to severe drought.

In a Sept. 20 release, the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture noted that farmers on P.E.I. had a good crop of hay this summer, leading to the decision to lend a helping hand to Western Canadian farmers.

“Our fellow farmers in Western Canada are feeling the effects of a severe drought. Many are faced with a shortage of feed and culling breeding stock because they simply don’t have the hay,” Ron Maynard, president of the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture, said in the release.

The federation has teamed up with the P.E.I. Department of Agriculture and the Canadian Federation of Agriculture for the project.

The three groups are working with the Canadian National Railway on what they call the Hay West campaign.

More shipments are planned to be sent once more for transportation has been secured.
