Summer Mode: Activated

Prince Edward Island’s Activator exploring why the province is the place to be this summer

Emma MacKinnon has three main goals this summer on Prince Edward Island: adventure, fun and to share her experiences with Islanders.

She is exploring as Activate Our Island’s “Activator”, road tripping around the province with a mission to find and share its best-kept secrets, and what makes it the place to be.

“I don’t know where else you’d want to be during the summer. Prince Edward Island has everything you could ask for,” she says.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

MacKinnon says the experience has only just begun but already feels like a dream come true, as she’s set out to explore her home province.

“As someone who spent the last couple of summers away, being back home is so nice. It’s so gorgeous here, and the people of Prince Edward Island are so next-level friendly,” she says.

As the Activator, MacKinnon travels around and shares her experience along the way through Activate Our Island’s Instagram page. Her highlights so far have included the North Cape region and its Wind Energy Interpretive Centre, the Stompin’

Tom Centre in Tignish, Summerside’s Eptek Art & Culture Centre and exploring Points East, including the Greenwich boardwalk at the Prince Edward Island National Park.

And this is only the beginning of MacKinnon’s adventures this summer.

“There is so much to do here. Whether people like adventure, nature, or history, there is a little something for everyone,” she says.

EXPLORING AT HOME

MacKinnon has been visiting different markets across the island, including the Downtown Farmers’ Market on Charlottetown’s Queen Street and Montague’s new Bogside Farmers’ Market. She’s also made it her goal to visit each of the 60-plus lighthouses in Prince Edward Island and has so far made it to five.

The biggest thing MacKinnon notices on her travels is how Islanders are so friendly, no matter where or when she meets them.

“We’re known for our friendliness, hospitality and for our sense of community here. Islanders do a great job of making people feel very welcome, no matter where they are from,” says MacKinnon.

With so much for Islanders to see and do this summer, whether they’ve lived in the province their whole lives or are new to town, MacKinnon says the list of things to explore is endless when Prince Edward Island is your backyard.

“Spending summer in Prince Edward Island feels like spending summer in paradise, and I’m so happy to showcase how great it is here,” she says.
