Repeat drunk driver jailed

A P.E.I. man who left his vehicle behind after it got stuck was sentenced recently to 28 days in jail for driving drunk.

Wayne Kent Doiron, 53, appeared before Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he entered a guilty plea.

Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court that on March 5 at around 10 p.m., the RCMP responded to a call from a motorist who said they came across an SUV that was off the road.

The caller reported that a male who appeared to be impaired got out and asked her to drive him home to Cornwall.

Beck said that when Doiron got out of the SUV a box of beer fell out.

When the police went to Doiron’s home, his wife told them he was in the bedroom passed out, Beck said.

Doiron later provided breathalyzer samples that were more than 2.5 times the legal limit.

The court heard he also had a prior conviction for impaired driving and another for refusing to provide a breath sample.

Along with the jail time, Orr fined Doiron $2,000 and ordered him to pay a $600 victim surcharge.

Doiron is also banned from driving for one year.
