Drunk driver caught at checkstop jailed

A P.E.I. woman who said she thought she was OK to drive after falling asleep was sentenced recently to three days in jail.

Paula Marie Campbell, 39, appeared before Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where she pleaded guilty to drunk driving.

Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court that on March 13 at around 12:50 a.m., the RCMP were conducting a checkstop in Cornwall when Campbell pulled up.

Campbell later provided breathalyzer samples that were higher than the legal limit.

Defence lawyer Scott Barry told the court Campbell had a couple of drinks and fell asleep.

When she woke up, Campbell thought she was OK to drive, Barry said.

Along with the jail time, Orr fined Campbell $1,000, ordered her to pay a $300 victim surcharge and banned her from driving for one year.
