Angling offence upheld in court

A P.E.I. man caught fishing where he wasn’t allowed to was told to pay his $200 fine in P.E.I. provincial court in Charlottetown recently.

Trevor Campbell, who represented himself in court, was observed fishing in the pool at the end of a spillway on April 16 at 12:20 p.m. by conservation officers conducting a check at a pond in Heatherdale.

Campbell said he didn’t know it wasn’t allowed, so the officer pointed to the sign less than 15 feet away that said angling was prohibited within 23 metres downstream of a spillway.

“I didn’t see the sign but that’s my own fault,” Campbell told Judge Nancy Orr, who upheld the ticket fine of $200.

Campbell then asked how to go about getting reimbursed for damage to his fence.

Conservation officers delivered his court summons to his house. As they were leaving, the driver backed into Campbell’s fence. Campbell says he has video of the incident and had called the head office, but hadn’t heard back.
