ATLANTIC BRIEFS DESK sw-briefs@saltwire.com

Public health officials in P.E.I. have announced the province will be getting 29,000 more vaccines before the end of June.

Officials did not have specific delivery dates for the extra vaccinations, but did say it will come in two shipments.

Premier Dennis King said he spoke with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and asked for more vaccines to help speed up the Island’s reopening plan.

“We said from the beginning that we would reassess our reopening plan if factors changed. With these additional vaccines we will review our Moving Forward plan and share further details with Islanders next week,” King said in a news release.

Dr. Heather Morrison, chief public health officer of P.E.I., said the new vaccinations will be crucial in hitting vaccination targets. She also urged Islanders to do their part.

“With the additional supply being received in the coming weeks I am encouraging all Islanders to book an appointment to get vaccinated,” she said in the release.

Officials did not say which vaccines they expect to be getting.

There are currently four active cases of COVID-19 on P.E.I., with 206 total cases since the start of the pandemic.
