HONOURING THE PAST

Thursday’s vigil came at the end of a week of ceremonies. The following were some of the other ways Island Mi’kmaq have been working to honor the past:

• 215 pairs of children’s shoes were placed beside the Sir John A. Macdonald statue in Charlottetown and 80 people gathered for a vigil and protest May 31.

• Later that day, the shoes were taken to the Abegweit reserve in Scotchfort, where they were placed on 215 crosses.

• A sacred fire was lit at the ceremony and tended by Junior Peter-Paul for the following 215 hours.

• At the end of the 215 hours, the shoes were removed and buried during another ceremony.

• Mi’kmaq Printing and Design was also present June 10, selling two different orange shirts with a plan to donate some of the proceeds to survivors and their families.
