Memories of Mom’s magical apron

CINDY DAY weathermail@weatherbyday.ca @CindyDayWeather Brenda Howatt Charlottetown, P.E.I. Cindy Day is SaltWire Network’s Chief Meteorologist.

Tomorrow is a special day, a day we celebrate motherhood, the mother of the family, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.

Earlier this month, I received a lovely poem that I would like to share with you.

It comes from Brenda Howatt. It brought back many fond memories and made me smile. I hope it does the same for you.

Mom and Her Wonderful Apron

Let’s enjoy a story about a very special pair.

It’s about Mom and her apron; they were together nearly everywhere.

Mom had several assorted aprons of blue, red, and green,

It became a guessing game which colour would arrive on the scene.

Mom wore her apron daily, but it was not for show.

It came in very handy wherever Mom did go.

Mom found many uses for her apron that she wore day in, day out.

This apron was important to her, without a doubt.

Mom’s apron became a towel, a dust cloth, and even cleaned mirrors.

It was a garment to keep her arms warm, a cloth to wipe away tears.

Behind Mom’s apron, there were times when little children would hide.

It was a scarf on windy days when she stepped outside.

Mom is sure to think about what else to use her apron for,

She keeps coming up with ideas galore.

She thinks to place this ordinary apron on other shoulders with care,

When it was time for a haircut, mom’s apron was there.

It was necessary for Mom’s

apron to be with her, so it seemed.

Mom always wore this practical accessory to keep her clothes clean.

A sudden knock at the door, the unexpected company was here.

Mom removed her soiled apron and a clean dress would appear.

Sometimes when Mom’s back was turned, her apron we would untie.

It was amusing to hear how and what would be her reply.

She would laugh and jokingly say, “Scram out of my sight.”

Teasing Mom by untying her apron was such a highlight.

Often mom’s apron was a container for transporting many a thing.

It was unknown what might be carried, what surprises Mom would bring.

Occasionally, baby chickens were brought inside because they were weak,

Mom would carefully care for them, getting them back on their feet.

Mom carried many things in her apron; she carried whatever she could.

She carried apples, tomatoes, beans, eggs, small pieces of wood.

Mom’s apron was ideal for transporting freshly picked cherries.

And when they were in season, tiny wild berries.

Besides the many roles of the apron, its pocket was quite handy

At times, out from the pocket, came a peppermint candy.

When out for a long walk and in need of something to eat.

From her apron pocket, Mom would give us a treat.

The apron pocket carried safety pins, string, and even the mail.

A pair of scissors, a substitute hammer, and a nail.

The apron was with her when Mom went to the clothesline,

For in the apron pocket, clothespins she would find.

Mom wore her apron when she went to the store,

The pocket served as a purse; carrying change was its chore.

The pocket carried a paper and pencil,

Mom wrote notes throughout the day.

At the end of the evening, she would read them; then pray.

These special moments I gladly want to share

How Mom’s apron was a helping hand, she wore most everywhere.

I fondly acknowledge the apron and the memories that it brings

And the many moms who found an apron beneficial for so many things.

Now we know why Mom tied her apron with such care. …they were a very special pair.
