New Charlottetown café celebrates the work of Salvador Dali

A new, European fusion café inspired by the art of Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali is open for Islanders wanting a unique dining experience.

The Salvador Dali Café officially opened April 23 inside Charlottetown’s Arts Hotel on Kent Street.

While the café was initially slated for a full opening last summer, COVID-19 put a stop to that plan.

The café’s kitchen has been serving food for Trailside Music Hall performances since September 2020 and has received overwhelming support from the community, general manager Blair Smith said in a news release.

“We feel it’s now time to open the doors to the Dali Café so all Islanders can enjoy the space and the menu without needing tickets to a show,” Smith said.

Still, café management is taking it slow with the expansion due to COVID-19 restrictions. The café is open only on weekends, starting Friday at 4 p.m. and 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, for the time being. A further full opening is planned the summer, featuring a grab-and-go lunch menu.

The café’s menu will incudes an array of tapas and Spanish-inspired dishes, created by chef Patrick Young, who joined the café in January after 22 years at Dundee Arms.

“It’s been a fun challenge to build Dali’s menu,” Young said. “It’s a totally different concept from what I was used to and I’m looking forward to experimenting with new flavours and dishes for the public to enjoy.”

Outside dining will also be available through the café’s European-style, sliding glass doors.

Luis Roman of Studio L Interiors designed the inside of the café to create a vibrant, artful and social space from the vision of Arts Hotel owner Richard Homburg, says the release.

The walls of the café are decorated with works from Homburg’s collection of art by Salvador Dali, including signed lithographs.

“There’s a real atmosphere in the café and I think people will feel that energy when they visit us,” Smith said. “It’s something we’re going to continue to build on and the summer will bring more opportunities for us to do that.”
