Helping others ‘feel good about themselves’

Kayla Conway’s new business brings joy through beauty and plants

For many people, there is something almost therapeutic about getting their makeup done or going shopping for a new plant.

Mix the two together, as Kayla Conway has, and you have absolute bliss.

Conway has been a certified beautician, lash technician and microblader for four years.

“I wanted to make others feel good about themselves,” said Conway.

Her interest in plants started in 2020 when she began planting her own vegetables.

“It started with gardening. I had my first baby at the beginning of the pandemic and I had bad post-partum so it was a way of coping,” said Conway.

Since Conway’s previous ventures, Mama’s Forest and KC Cosmetics, was something similar — with her doing cosmetics on one side and her former business partner having plants in another portion — the idea of combining the two made sense.

“I thought I’d just combine the two esthetics,” said Conway, who is now calling it Tranquil Oak Boutique and Beauty.

“When I moved the company out of Truro, they were pretty much combined anyways but they were under two different names,” said Conway. “So, I chose a name that would be for both.”

Since Conway is in the process of renovating to open a brick-and-mortar location on Moose River Road in Middle Musquodoboit Valley, all plant sales can be done online through the Tranquil Oak Boutique and Beauty. Once the shop is formally opened in July, she will be

adding a portion where people can book an appointment for their makeup, lashes, microblading and other services.

She does deliveries into Truro as well and has a pickup location in Halifax as well. Conway also plans on continuing to travel for weddings and special events like she was previously doing.

They are close to being done with renovations and Conway is pleased with the process.

“They are going good. It’s neat that we are able to take a smaller area and turn it into a business,” she said.

Until the formal opening day, people can follow on Instagram as she plans on posting progress videos and photos to keep people updated.
