Shortts Lake hosting upcoming CASA events

JOEY SMITH THE COLCHESTER WIRE

The Canadian Association of Smallmouth Anglers (CASA) will return to Colchester County in August.

CASA will host a bass fishing tournament on Shortts Lake on Aug. 15. It will be the group’s second event this summer at the popular South Colchester lake after being there on July 11.

“Shortts Lake always has the larger fish because of the bait situation; there’s so many gaspereau in there … so that lake is just teeming with food for these fish, and more food make fat fish,” said Mike Lapierre, CASA president and tournament angler.

“So, it is one of the places that we love to go. It’s for sure one of the highlights of the season; one that everybody looks forward to.”

The July tournament on Shortts Lake attracted 18 boats and the biggest bass caught that day weighed 2.55 pounds.

Anglers, mostly in teams of two, keep their five biggest fish for weigh-in at the end of the live-release tournament. The team with the heaviest cumulative total is the winner. The circuit also tracks points throughout the season to crown champions following the final event in the fall.

This year’s CASA schedule features events on Shortts Lake and Morris Lake in HRM.

CASA typically holds two tournaments on Shortts Lake, but this season will host three, including the season finale on Oct. 17 – the Kenny Roberts Classic, held in memory of the past-president and longtime member.

“We renamed it to celebrate him, his contribution, and he loved bass fishing,” said Lapierre.

Anywhere from 16 to 24 boats typically hit the water for tournaments, which run from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CASA, founded in 1989, welcomes new members and promotes fun for the whole family.

“We’re really making an effort to get new people involved, like smaller boats, and we’ve got quite a few this year,” said Lapierre. “We had four or five brand new teams that have never fished a tournament before, so it’s been good.”
