RAINFORTH, Orland Robert

Of Morristown Kings Co., passed away on June 1, 2023, in Valley Hospice. He was in his 80th year. Born in Berwick, he lived his entire life in Morristown. Orland was a son of the late Whitney and Edith (Fitch) Rainforth.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Cheryl (Lutz) Rainforth; brother, John (Louise) Rainforth; nephews, Adam (Kathy Ann) Rainforth, their children Jack and Lucy, and Peter Rainforth and his children Simon, Lydia, and Charlie. He will also be missed by special nephew, Danny (Marla) Gould. Orland will be fondly remembered by Cheryl's surviving sisters, Beatrice Matthews and Joyce Gates; brother-in-law, Reid Gould; and by many nieces and nephews from her family.

Besides his parents, Orland was predeceased by his niece, Kristin Rainforth.

Orland was happiest when working outside. He took over the family farm from his father, and worked diligently to make improvements and embrace new agricultural technologies until his retirement. Noted for his knowledge and success in growing apples, Orchard View Farm was frequently on the Fruit Growers' Association annual tour. He received trophies repeatedly for being the grower with the highest packout (quality) apples, first at the Berwick Fruit Company and then at Scotian Gold Cooperative. Orland contributed to his industry by being a Director of both these companies for a number of years.

His love of the outdoors extended to his hobbies fishing and hunting, and just being in the woods. These were family times as well, in his younger years with his father and in later years taking his nephews to favourite fishing spots. Orland and Cheryl spent many happy days at their property at Lake Paul, always welcoming family and friends for meals and other occasions. An expert gardener, he was always happy to share the bounty of his vegetables, and took great pride in his flower and shrub gardens. Being an avid reader gave him a great deal of knowledge about a wide variety of subjects. This, along with an amazing memory, provided him with strong views that he willingly shared on many political and environmental topics.

Orland and Cheryl loved to travel and were so glad that they had gone to Europe, to California, and on many trips to the Caribbean with their travelling friends. He loved good food, and thought nothing of a trip to the South Shore just for a favourite seafood dish. A fan of country music, they followed the Jamborees from Nine Mile River to the South Shore and to Fox Mountain.

It would be a great omission to leave out a recognition of the last ten years of Orland's life, which he devoted to the very patient and continuous care of his wife Cheryl, as she battled the unbelievably sad effects of dementia. His friends and family applauded his steadfastness while at the same time marking the toll it took upon his wellbeing.

Orland was blessed to have a succession of wonderful health caregivers in the later years of his life, as he dealt with cancer and then with multiple other illnesses. Orland's family wants to recognize the excellent care he received at Valley Regional Hospital and from the VON over this period of time. Orland was especially grateful to his neighbours who were always there to help in an amazing variety of ways.

At Orland's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Donations in his memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice. Interment will take place at a private service in Berwick Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., toll free 1-855-8253448.
