Police probe death at doughnut shop

IAN FAIRCLOUGH THE CHRONICLE HERALD ifairclough@herald.ca @iancfairclough

Halifax Regional Police are investigating the death of a man at a Tim Hortons outlet in Halifax late Friday morning.

Police responded just before noon to a report of an injured man at the Tim Hortons located near the end of Barrington Street in the city’s south end, near the Atlantic Superstore and Via Rail station.

When officers arrived, they found the man dead inside the coffee shop.

Const. John Macleod said the investigation is in the early stages and police will be on the scene for an extended period of time. Police are asking the public to remain away from the area to allow officers to conduct the investigation.

Macleod said he hadn’t been given any information on whether the man was inside and there was an altercation, or arrived at the shop already injured. He said he hadn’t been told an age, or whether the man was an employee, customer or passerby. He also didn’t know where in the shop the man had been injured or discovered.

“I haven’t even been told if it’s suspicious at this point, other than there is a person deceased,” he said. “Our folks are investigating, they’ll look at it as they normally would, but nobody has told me anything about anything suspicious or any kind of suspects or that they’re looking for anybody, just that there is somebody deceased.”

He said he didn’t think an update would happen before the end of the day Friday.
