Man charged with murder in Labelle

IAN FAIRCLOUGH THE CHRONICLE HERALD ifairclough@herald.ca @iancfairclough

A Queens County man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a woman in the small community of Labelle, about 40 kilometres from Liverpool.

RCMP spokesman Cpl. Chris Marshall said a 50-year-old man drove to the RCMP office in Dartmouth late Wednesday afternoon and said that he had killed the woman. He was arrested and RCMP in Queens County were contacted. They went to a home in the community and found a 62-year-old woman dead.

Jeffrey Allen Ohrt, 50, of Liverpool, was transferred to investigators with the Southwest Nova Major Crime unit and charged. He appeared briefly in Bridgewater provincial court Friday and is scheduled to return next Thursday for a possible bail hearing.

Marshall said Ohrt and the victim knew each other, but wouldn’t say how and wouldn’t identify her. Police said they believe the death was a “targeted incident.”

Where exactly the woman was found is also not being disclosed, he said, because of the size of the small community. He did say that she lived at the place where she was found.

Marshall said it’s unclear why the man drove all the way to Dartmouth — Labelle is about 130 kilometres away — when there are several RCMP office between Labelle and Halifax County.

Labelle is in an area bounded by several lakes, including Molega and Ponhook.

Anyone with information on the death is asked to contact RCMP of Crime Stoppers.
