Taylor helps Canada to rugby win over South Africa

Emma Taylor and Canada’s women’s rugby team returned to action after four months on Saturday afternoon and didn’t show any signs of rust.

Scotsburn’s Taylor had a pair of conversions in Canada’s convincing 66-7 victory over South Africa in a test match in Madrid, Spain. It was the first time Canada had played the Springbok women in over a decade.

Sabrina Poulin and Fancy Bermudez each tallied two tries to lead the Canadian squad, which led 35-0 at halftime. Daleaka Menin, Sarah-maude Lachance, Paige Farries, Julia Schell, Marie-pier Fauteux and Renee Gonzalez added single majors and captain Sophie de Goede kicked six conversions.

The test match was the first for Canada following its fourth-place performance at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand last fall. Nineteen players have returned from the World Cup squad, including Taylor and fellow ex-st. Francis Xavier X-women standouts Tyson Beukeboom and Sara Kaljuvee.
