SMITH, Stanley Read

Beloved husband for 66 years to Vivian (Lanning) Smith and father of Louise (Malcolm Moffat), Geoffrey (Elaine Maccormack) and Alison (Larry Gaudet). Grandfather of Jackson and Theo Gaudet. Predeceased by daughters, Pamela and Elizabeth. Stanley was the youngest of 10 siblings, and is lovingly remembered by his many nieces, nephews, friends and former neighbors across the country. Born in Philipsburg, Que., he served overseas with the Royal Canadian Regiment during the Korean War. After graduating from Sir George Williams University, he had a long career in the investment industry in Montreal, Que., and later in Toronto, Ont., Stanley and Vivian raised their family in St. Lambert, a suburb of Montreal, Que., and there they made many lifelong friends while being active in the community. Stanley was deeply appreciative of how his older sisters Evelyn and Marion helped him get a start in life by their care and guidance during his teen years. All his life Stanley had a sensitive appreciation for the natural world and animals. He was an avid birdwatcher and befriended a succession of family pets who cherished his playful attention. He was a lifelong athlete, often ahead of the curve in adopting healthy lifestyle, dietary and exercise habits that made him a formidable golfer and squash and tennis player (and talented baseball player in his youth). In retirement, he and Vivian moved to Kingsburg, where they made many new friends and were respected village elders. Throughout his life, Stanley was a committed volunteer that included helping former inmates integrate into society and serving on the Board of the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy, a non-profit doing ecological good works. He is fondly remembered by his Kingsburg friends for going on long walks on the coast, hosting oyster shucking parties and being there, always, when neighbors needed help for any reason. Later in life, he became a fan of Chinese teas that he enjoyed brewing and serving his friends. Most recently, Stanley and Vivian lived in Halifax where, again, they formed new friendships and were supported by a small group of dedicated caregivers. Stanley is remembered by all for his thoughtfulness, his gentle demeanor, subtle sense of humor and his ceaseless support of friends and the family whom he loved unconditionally and who loved him. He was a wonderful, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, mentor and loyal friend who enriched the lives of so many.
