TRANSIT TRANSITION

We need to make lemonade from lemons at every opportunity. The rapid hike in gas prices has been devastating for many — on top of the rise in just about everything else — but has resulted in a windfall in extra tax revenue for all levels of government.

This is the opportunity to wean riders to public transit from their expensive-torun vehicles. Even diesel buses are less polluting than the 20-plus cars the motorists would park to ride the bus.

The extra tax revenue should be spent on more buses to make the system convenient — more frequent, reliable and affordable to entice their use by more people. This would be a win-win for commuters: besides saving gas and parking costs, it would be more relaxing than coping with rush-hour traffic.

It would provide rural communities a greater ease of transportation and convenience, particularly for the elderly. The biggest windfall would be the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from fewer cars, which will benefit everyone, given the climate crisis we are battling.
