MAHON, Nola Jean

Age 71 of Upper Tantallon and Halifax, passed away in Parkstone Enhanced Care on January 22, 2022. Born in Truro, she was the daughter of Karl and Bernice Barnhill of Bible Hill. While in high school, she was an active member of Saint David’s United Church choir where she kindled a romance that turned into a lifelong love story with her partner, Jim. Nola graduated from the Nova Scotia Teachers College and taught at Sir John A. Macdonald High School.

She left her teaching career to raise their two daughters and later joined the Regional Residential Services Society as a counsellor for mentallychallenged adults. It was no secret that Jim and Nola found a love that was so natural to them, and Jim often said that Nola was the most beautiful woman in the world inside and out. Nola saw the goodness in everyone she met and believed that we are all created equal just trying to make our own life stories. Nola was an incredibly loving wife, mother and grandmother (known as Granola) and Jim and Nola celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary in 2021.

Nola belonged to the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign and the Tantallon Voices in Rhythm choir. She played the piano, was a great seamstress, loved quilting and, most of all, enjoyed spending time with family and friends and, like her mother, was an accomplished cook. Nola is survived by her husband, Jim; her two daughters, Suzanne Lawrence (Doug), Bedford; and Annette Mahon (Axel), Germany; her two brothers, Dennis Barnhill (Lynn) and Robert Barnhill (Ruth); and three grandchildren, James, Maren and Calum. Special thanks to Dr. David Clarke, Dr. Andrea Hebb and Dr. Syed Ali Imran of the Neurology 7.4 Unit, QEII Health Sciences Centre; and to the very kind Citadel Court staff at Parkstone Enhanced Care. They were amazing in the care, respect, and attention they offered Nola. There will be a “celebration of life” for family and friends at a future date. Contributions can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Canadian Mental Health Association, Nova Scotia Division.
