PROTECTING THE PUBLIC

I was a licensed RN for 45 years, having worked in many areas of nursing practice. I was also on the faculty of Memorial University’s school of nursing.

I am troubled, even angered by the reports of health staff refusing the COVID vaccination. The reasons given for refusal are generally “freedom of choice” or a belief that the risks of receiving the jab outweigh the benefits. They don’t trust the science.

My first thought is that RNS or LPNS who refuse the vaccination are breaching the ethical standards of their profession. They inject antibiotics into patients diagnosed with bacterial infections and insulin into patients/clients with diabetes, among many other drugs. They do that, yet don’t believe the science behind the development of the medication? Why do they not believe the COVID vaccine protects from infection, or at least severe disease?

Regarding the question of mandatory vaccination: RNS and LPNS must renew their licence to practise on a regular basis, essentially to confirm qualification to practise their profession. This is a form of protecting the public, the ultimate priority. And I believe that is the ultimate goal of mandating vaccination for health professionals.
