MATHESON, James N. "Jim"

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Matheson. Jim’s positive outlook and quiet strength helped him battle through major surgery and a cancer diagnosis in September 2020. Sadly, the cancer returned in April 2021 and was too much for even Jim to overcome. On May 5, 2021 in the VG Site, QEII, Jim passed away suddenly but peacefully while surrounded in love by his adoring wife, daughters, and family both in person and virtually. Jim was born in Halifax, December 18, 1948. He was preceded in death by his father, Cameron;, his mother, Mary "Winnie"; and his in-laws, Patrick, Clare and Stephen Shea. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Cathy; his daughters, Jennifer (Yon) Smith-matheson, Heather (Ian) Gillis, Kaitlyn Matheson (Tom); his grandchildren, Cameron, Leila, and Nova; his sister, Jean (Calvin) Munro; brother, Donnie Matheson; and nephews, James and Blair. Jim had many loving relatives and friends in Halifax, Cape Breton and Tignish, P.E.I., whom he loved very much and who have been a huge part of his life. Jim was kind, loving, and a man of faith who had a positive and logical outlook on life. He had the best “dad jokes” and a gentle smile. Education was important to him. He graduated from St. Mary’s University with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree then completed his CPA (certified professional accountant designation). He encouraged and supported his daughters to become independent through education and in life. He often told them and others how proud he was of their achievements. Jim was a collector of many things. He loved to paint, build model cars, puzzles, and landscape his beloved cottage. He was a devoted humanitarian, serving as President for the Cerebral Palsy Association for 10 years, volunteering his finance skills at St. Stephen’s Church for eight years, and receiving a Humanitarian Award for his dedication to individuals with disabilities. Above all he was a family man, loving husband, dedicated father, and fun Grampy who always had the best treats. The family would like to thank the excellent care by the paramedics, emergency staff, QEII, the physicians and nursing staff on 3B and especially Dr. Patricia Beresford for her dedication, as the family refers to her as their “earth angel”. A memorial service will be held in Atlantic Funeral Home, Bayers Road at a later date when family and friends can be together. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, Bosom Buddies, or charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made at the Halifax Chapel, www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com
