Ladouceur, Purcell outside playoff mix

Canada's junior curling teams remain in the playoff hunt as the 2022 world junior championships in Jonkoping, Sweden hit the halfway mark.

Owen Purcell and his rink from the Halifax Curling Club sit with a record of 2-3 after splitting a pair of games Tuesday. Meanwhile, Bedford's Isabelle Ladouceur is 1-3 on the women's side, tied for seventh place but just outside of the playoff mix.

Purcell opened the day with a 10-2 win over William Becker of New Zealand (0-5).

Leading 3-2, Canada went on a run, scoring two in the sixth, stealing single points in the seventh and eighth, and another steal of three in the ninth to conclude the game.

The team couldn’t carry that momentum into the evening match against Switzerland’s Kim Schwaller (3-2).

The Swiss, up by one point and with the hammer in the 10th end, scored one to fend off a Canadian comeback attempt to win 7-5.

Purcell and his team of third Joel Krats, second Adam Mceachern and lead Scott Weagle sit in fifth place. They have one game scheduled for Wednesday, against two-time world junior bronze-medalist James Craik of Scotland (5-0).

The top four teams in both the men’s and women’s sides advance to the playoffs.

Ladouceur lost its only game on Tuesday, a tough 11-5 decision to unbeaten Eirin Mesloe of Norway (4-0).

Ahead by one in the sixth, Norway scored three in the end. Canada attempted to come back and made a draw for three in the eighth end. But Norway scored four in the ninth and Ladouceur conceded the match.

The Canadian women plays twice on Wednesday, versus Sweden’s Moa Dryburgh (2-2) and Karolina Jensen of Denmark (0-4).
