Selects lose second straight at Esso Cup

The Northern Selects lost their second game in as many tries to start the Esso Cup under-18 girls' national hockey championship.

The Ontario-based Durham West Lightning scored two goals in the third period en route to a 3-1 victory over the Atlantic champion Selects on Tuesday afternoon in Okotoks, Alta.

Brooke Thomson had the lone goal for the Selects 1:15 into the second period.

The Selects (0-1-1), who lost 2-1 in overtime to the Notre Dame Hounds in their tournament opener on Monday, will face the Remparts du Richelieu of Quebec on Wednesday.

At the Telus Cup under-18 boys' championship, also in Okotoks, the Sydney Rush played Quebec champion Cantonniers de Magog later Tuesday.

Sydney dropped its opener 8-3 to the Mississauga Reps on Monday.
