DAY, Reo Malcolm

Age 96, Halifax, died January 21, 2022, in Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building, QEII. Born in Halifax, he was a son of the late Hugh and Ruby Day. Reo was a great exemplar of the best characteristics of his generation. He had a strong work ethic. This began when his father died in the middle of the Depression when Reo was eight years old, and Reo would help his mother with the family store. During the Second World War he served in the Marine Division of the RCAF in the North Atlantic, followed with a career at Fairey Aviation and the Department of National Defense. Reo was a Masonic brother in Ad Astra No. 130 Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia since 1947. In retirement he always kept busy, for example, building a garage at his summer place on Sober Island in his 70s, and re-shingling the roof of the summer house when in his 80s. He shovelled snow from his driveway until a heart attack at age 94. He believed in treating people right, and once got into trouble at school defending a boy who was being bullied because of his race. He had a consistent sense of duty. He always considered it a priority to provide the best he could for his family.

He and his wife Myrtle were very sociable, and for many years enjoyed dancing or playing bridge with a wide circle of friends. He was a caring partner to Myrtle for the 73 years of their marriage, and missed her greatly after her death in 2020. He was very proud of his sons and grandchildren. Besides his parents and wife Myrtle, Reo was predeceased by brother, Carl and sister, Pansy Patricia (Taylor). Reo is survived by sons, Philip (Theresa) and Victor (Charlene); grandchildren, Christopher (Andriana), Martin (Kara) and Laura (Peter), and great-grandchildren, Colton and Bryson Day, Margot Carrington, and Flora Day. Due to the pandemic there will be a private committal service and funeral arrangements will be announced at later date. Donations may be made to Trinity Anglican Church, Halifax, or charity of choice. Condolences may be sent to the family via: www.jasnowfuneralhome.com
