Mclellan Cup up for grabs in milestone match

THE CHRONICLE HERALD

The Mclellan Cup has been a staple on the Maritime men’s club curling scene for 116 years.

On Wednesday at noon, the historic trophy will be up for grabs when the host Halifax Curling Club hosts the Wolfville Curling Club in a milestone 1,500th match.

Representing the Halifax Curling club are the teams skipped by Graham Usher, Craig Corbett and Doug Mclean.

Competing for the Mclellan Cup holder Wolfville club are skips Tony Stirling, Brian Boutilier and Matt Gowland.

The Mclellan Cup had been continuously played for since 1907.

The challenge takes place with three teams from the club that holds the trophy playing three teams from the host club on a Wednesday afternoon. The winner is decided by a total score for all three games.

The winner then travels the next Wednesday to defend against another club. This continues each Wednesday for the travelling club until they are unsuccessful in their defence of the Cup.

Ed Getson, one of the three Mclellan Cup trustees, said the competition is important for club curlers.

“The competition provides an opportunity for club curlers, who normally curl only within their club, to potentially curl in rinks across the Maritimes,” Getson said in a news release. “No matter the outcome of any of the matches, these curlers now have a chance to experience the social aspect of curling and the fellowship of friendly competition outside their individual clubs.”
