COMMUNITY ACTION STIFLED

I’ve followed all the COVID rules as they were implemented by Public Health — received both vaccinations and quietly observed all the restrictions, although I often wondered at the fairness of some of the regulations.

I have watched big corporate retailers stay open while small, independent stores had to shut their doors, but I stayed silent.

But now I feel have to voice my concerns. I am a member of a small organization that works hard to provide a variety of opportunities to the members of our community. I was disappointed to learn that the rules for a community organization were more rigid than for a retail store.

A community member wanted to set up a children’s clothing exchange and use the hall; no money would exchange hands, but families could find outfits to fit their children. This would be a great benefit to many.

Upon inquiring about COVID protocols, we found that along with mask-wearing and social distancing, we’d also have to ask for proof of vaccine. Why the different requirement from a retail store? Are the rules so rigid that they are allowed to hurt some members of my community?

There are too many rules put into place without thought over how it affects the members of our communities who are trying to help themselves, without waiting for government handouts.
