JOHNSON (nee-keating, ex-hoopey), Edith Marie "Edie"

April 28, 1946 – July 11, 2021. Edie passed away peacefully on a beautiful sunny evening in the Gatineau Hills in Wakefield, Que., with family by her side telling funny stories about her, and her favourite 50’s crooners playing in the background. Born in Florence, Cape Breton, but raised in Halifax, Edie joined the workforce at an early age, initially working various retail positions in downtown Halifax. After getting married and having her four boys, she rejoined the workforce and transitioned to clerical and financial administration roles. Some of her more memorable working years were spent at the Maritime Medical Association, Nova Scotia Building Supplies, Digital Equipment Corporation, Bedford Basin Yacht Club, and Air Nova, all in the metro Halifax area. Upon retirement, Edie was a volunteer member of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport "Tartan Team" with Brian for many years, taking delight in “herding strays”, uniting families, and meeting, greeting and helping travellers from all over the world. Her hobbies included sewing, reupholstering and restoring antique furniture, cribbage, reading, cooking, collecting thimbles, various crafts, and beating all challengers at Trivial Pursuit. But her favourite pastime by far was travelling the world by air, land and sea with her late husband Brian. Together they travelled all over the United Kingdom visiting extended family and friends, Ireland, and most of Europe. They took various cruises throughout Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and the West coast of North America. But after a “once in a lifetime” trip which saw Edie snorkel (yes, snorkel…) on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and drive all over New Zealand in a camper van (yes, a camper van…), they were hooked. Together they travelled by camper van back and forth across North America multiple times over several years, seeing all 50 US states and every Canadian province and territory. Edie is survived by her sons: Andrew "Andy" Hoopey of Halifax; Todd Hoopey of Sackville; Sean Hoopey and his children Sam and Robyn Hoopey, his fiancée Laurel Gillespie and her daughter Georgia Gibbons of Wakefield, Que.; stepdaughters, Sandra (Julio Signorelli) Johnson of Merrickville, Ont.; and Karen (Kevin) Latimer and grandson Mitchell Latimer of Kemptville, Ont.; and brother, Edwin "Eddie" Keating of Halifax. Edie also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, countless cousins and other extended family and friends across Canada and around the world – all of whom she was thrilled to connect with by correspondence, visit in person, or host at every available opportunity. Predeceased by her parents, Annie ‘“Anne” Clarinda (Fry) and Edwin “Ed” Victor Howard Keating; sister, Mary Keating; sister-in-law, Teresa Keating (all of Halifax); son, Jacob "Jake" Hoopey (of Sackville); and her husband of 28 years, Brian Johnson (of Halifax). Sincerest respect and gratitude to all the nurses on the second floor at Wakefield Memorial Hospital and to “The Aunties” aka Edie’s "Thunder Sisters": Betty Knodell, Phyllis Hart, and Goldie Godfrey. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Edie’s memory to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (http://chpca.ca/memorialwall) and make an Advance Care Plan (advancecareplanning.ca). Condolences/tributes/donations: Mcgarry Memorial Chapel, Wakefield, 819-4591800. www.hpmcgarry.ca
