MACVICAR (Townsend), Isabel Fraser

Of Dartmouth, It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Isabel Townsend Macvicar on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at home in Dartmouth, after a short illness. Born in Sydney, on October 7, 1934, she was a daughter of Dr. Henry and Janet (Mitchell) Townsend. Isabel spent her early years in Louisburg and then moved to New Glasgow. She graduated, Class of 1955, from Acadia University with a BA Art and History and BED Phys Ed. In 1952 she attended University of British Columbia where she completed a one-year Government Recreation Program. While at Acadia, she was a member of the woman’s hockey, synchronized swimming, volleyball, basketball, field hockey. She was named 1952 Freshman Class Officer, Class of 1955 Life Officer Vice President and also crowned Barrax Queen 1955. After graduation from Acadia in 1955, Isabel and Jim "Lefty" began their teaching and coaching career at Oxford Regional High School. In 1964 they moved to Dartmouth where she taught in various schools until 1991. Isabel was enthusiastic about anything she pursued and often said, “Why not give it a try?”, and if you said anything was an adventure, she was up for it, big or small. She enjoyed her time with the Quilt Guild, as a volunteer with the Little Harbour Fire Department, and singing with the Trinitarians. Drawn to the beach, Isabel was known to take a refreshing dip in the Northumberland Strait as late as mid-october. But her greatest passion was paddling with the Women Alike, A Breast A River Dragon Boat team in New Glasgow. She traveled with the team to local, national and international regattas in Ottawa, Ont., Windsor-detroit, Ont., Peterborough, Ont., Vancouver, B.C., and in Central Florida. She always enjoyed being active in sports; specifically running, biking, skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and fully enjoyed cheering on her grandchildren in any venue in which she might find them. She was her grandchildren’s biggest fan, and being called "Nanny" and most recently "G.G." brought her a special joy. And always, dedicated to her life-long friends, both old and new, LOL (Lots Of Love). Married in 1957 to James "Lefty" Macvicar she was a generous, caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, and friend. Together they raised their children, Kathy (Jamie) Naugler, of Hilden; Janet (Shawna), of Fredericton, N.B.; Jamie (Rhonda), of Dartmouth; and Andrew (Sherry), of Dartmouth; and enjoyed her grandchildren, Sarah (Jake Thomas), Jeremy (Forest Greenwell), Derek (Sarah Sears) Naugler, Rachel (Hayden) and Alec Macvicar, and Keegan, Kaleb and Isabella Macvicar; and her great-grandson, Emmett Thomas and Baby Naugler, soon to arrive; brothers, Sandy Townsend, of Scotsburn; Mitch Townsend, of New Glasgow; many nieces and nephews. Isabel was predeceased by her husband, James ‘Lefty’ Macvicar; parents, Dr. Henry and Janet Mitchell Townsend; by her only sister, Mary Newell Macfetridge; and Mary’s husbands, Edward Newell and Ernie Macfetridge (Truro).
