Shay Colley has been named to Canada Basketball's senior women's national team for the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2021 tournament in Puerto Rico.

The guard, who's originally from East Preston, moved to Ontario at the age of 10 and lists Brampton, Ont., as her hometown, will be among 12 players on a roster that features youngsters and newcomers who will be evaluated before this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The nine-day FIBA Women's Americup 2021 tournament opened on Friday. Canada will begin play Saturday afternoon versus the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Colley was a star guard at Michigan State, graduating in 2020. The 25-year-old will begin her professional career this fall with Charnay of the Ligue Feminine de Basketball, a women's pro hoops league in France.

She was one of 20 players that were invited to a twoweek national team training camp in Tampa, Fla., which wrapped up last weekend.

"After a few weeks of training together, we're ready to hit the court and measure ourselves against other teams in the Americas zone," said Lisa Thomaidis, the senior women's national team head coach. "This competition is an important step toward our goal of consistent presence and pursuit of excellence on the world championship stage."

Following the FIBA Women's Americup 2021, Canada will return to Tampa to continue training ahead of the Tokyo Games.

Daneesha Provo of North Preston was at the camp but suffered a devastating injury to her left Achilles tendon and had to leave the camp early.
