Baker named to Canadian Nextgen team

Bridgewater's Courtney Baker was named to Volleyball Canada's women's Nextgen team on Friday.

Baker, who had an awardfilled career with the Dalhousie Tigers, was one of two setters selected by Nextgen coach Gina Schmidt. Laura Madill of Oakville, Ont., is the other setter.

The 10-week program is being staged at the national team training centre from May 24 to July 30 in Richmond, B.C. The program will provide the athletes with an opportunity to train in environment that focuses on technical and tactical development in line with the women's senior national team according to the news release.

“The Nextgen program is a gateway for the senior national team and is an extremely important part of the women's national team framework,” said Schmidt. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with this talented group of athletes we have selected to this year's team.”

The five-foot-11 setter has previously been a member of Canada's junior and senior team.

Baker was named the U Sports women's volleyball player of the year in 2020. She was named a firstteam All-canadian for the third consecutive year. The 23-year-old was also a threetime Atlantic University Sport most valuable player with the Tigers.

After graduating from Dalhousie, Baker played professionally in Hungary for Szent Benedek.
