Locally Yours 2022 showcases Nova Scotia playwrights

JEAN ELLIS Jean Ellis is the marketing director of the South Shore Players.

Six short plays will come alive on the South Shore Players’ stage.

Locally Yours 2022 will take place May 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. and May 28 and 29 at 2 p.m. at Lunenburg’s Central United Church.

“We’re excited to showcase these great plays and proud that each one is written by a Nova Scotia playwright,” says Colleen Naomi, South Shore Players’ artistic director. “At Locally Yours 2022, theatregoers will enjoy a little bit of everything, from comedy to drama to historical fiction.”

The Fling, written by Jill

Martin Bouteillier and directed by Jessica Patterson, is a drama set in 1915 aboard a troop ship carrying soldiers and civilians across the North Atlantic.

“I grew up on stories about my family emigrating to Canada,” says Martin, “and decided to transform one of those stories into a play.”

Beach Day, written by Katerina Bakolias and directed by June Davidson, is a onewoman silent comedy where the beach is the perfect place to be.

“I hope this play brings dreams of sunnier days ahead,” says Bakolias.

A Sigh or a Wish, a drama written by Phyllis Jacklin and directed by Ben Tait, is set in Blue Rocks during the 1927

August gales.

“The play was inspired by the tragic loss of fishing schooners in the North Atlantic,” says Jacklin. “My aim was to capture the emotions of the story.”

Another Way to Spend Christmas, written by Teresa Patterson and directed by Nancy Wilson, chronicles a homeless woman who has come to terms with her life.

“This play allowed me to delve into the life my sister chose for herself and allowed me to let go of my judgment of her,” says Patterson.

The Holdup, written by

Matt Clairmont and directed by Chris Heide, delivers plenty of laughs when a would-be robber targets a bank in rural

Nova Scotia.

“I’m excited to see my words brought to life and I’m honoured to have my work selected,” says Clairmont.

Joy’s Kingdom, written by Dave Brumwell and directed by Anne Stockdale, is a serious, amusing and light-hearted tearjerker.

“My life is an open book,” jokes Brumwell. “It’s been very poorly written, however, and evidently I don’t make it out alive.”
