Luxury campsite coming to Strathgartney

STRATHGARTNEY — The Bonshaw area will soon be home to Prince Edward Island’s newest camping option.

Announced in a June 2 release, the former Strathgartney Provincial Park campground will be converted into a luxury camping area thanks to Meridian63° Luxury Camping. The site will open in fall 2021 and will operate yearround.

Owners Stephane Labrosse and Mike Robertson are offering off-grid eco-friendly accommodations that are fully furnished and heated with wood stoves in place of traditional RVs and campsites.

“After many years of planning guests are now going to have access to some of the best mountain biking and hiking trails in Atlantic Canada just steps from their bed,” said Robertson. “The Bonshaw area is full of outdoor adventure activities and our goal is to make that an easier experience for travellers.”

The original campground at Strathgartney opened on July 1, 1958, but closed more than 10 years ago. While the day park continues to be used, visitors will again have the option to stay overnight.

Washroom renovations are currently underway and when finished will provide the general public with access to completely redesigned washrooms in the park, said Labrosse.

“The new facilities will be perfect for travellers looking for the camping experience but have limited equipment or time.”

Portions of the campground will still be managed by P.E.I. Provincial Parks as a public day park with the trails and playground available to the public with temporary washrooms.

Work will continue throughout the summer to remove old asphalt, concrete and building structures to return the park to a more natural state, noted the release.
