Prince County man heading to jail for impaired driving

SUMMERSIDE — A 60-year-old Prince County driver caught with a bloodalcohol level more than three times the legal limit will spend time in jail.

Allan David Palmer pleaded guilty in Summerside provincial court recently to having a blood alcohol level of more than 80mg alcohol per 100 ml blood within two hours of driving.

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald read the facts into the record.

On March 9, 2021, Summerside police got a call about a man staggering to his car.

Police tracked down the vehicle described by the caller and found Palmer behind the wheel. Police noted signs of impairment.

Palmer was taken back to the police station and, around 7:30 p.m., provided two breath samples of 290 and 300mg alcohol per 100ml blood.

Palmer was kept in custody overnight due to the high readings.

Since the incident, Palmer took himself to detox, then completed the transition program and has been living at St. Eleanor’s House in Summerside since March 25.

A letter from St. Eleanor’s House said Palmer is actively engaged in programs and his own recovery.

Judge Krista MacKay sentenced Palmer to eight days in custody and a $2,000 fine. He must also pay $600 in victim fine surcharges and will be prohibited from driving for 18 months after his release.
