Summerside man going to jail for sexual assault

SUMMERSIDE — A 67-year-old Summerside man will spend 90 days in jail and have his name on the sex offender registry after he assaulted a woman in 2018.

James Jordan Richards of Summerside was sentenced in Summerside provincial court on April 21.

Court documents said that in August 2018 Richards put his hand down the victim’s pants. She became upset and left the residence. Richards denied the allegation and initially pleaded not guilty in January.

Judge Krista MacKay found Richards guilty and sentenced him to 90 days in jail followed by 24 months of probation. Richards will have his name on the sex offender registry and must provide a DNA sample to the National DNA Database. He must also pay $100 in victim fine surcharge.

While on probation, Richards must attend any assessments, treatment or counselling recommended by the probation officer, including help for sexual deviancy. Richards must also stay away from the victim.
