Rezoning application postponed after new property owners say they don’t want it

SUMMERSIDE — A rezoning application for a Summerside property that garnered more than 169 signatures in opposition has all but died on the floor at city council.

Green Road Properties Ltd. had asked for a rezoning of 32 Bayview Dr. from a single-family home (R1) to multi-storey residential (R4). Neighbouring residents immediately opposed the application, citing concerns such as a sizable increase in local traffic.

The narrow lot and home at 32 Bayview has a much larger property behind it that is already zoned R4, which the proponent also owns. They wanted to combine both properties under a single zone, which would allow for a housing development sometime in the future.

However, during the public meeting held to allow residents to ask questions about this rezoning, it was revealed that Green Road Properties has already agreed to sell both properties and the closing date is in May.

The young couple who are buying the land from the company addressed council and stated that they have no interest in developing the land and their preference would be for 32 Bayview Dr. to remain as R1.

The buyers and seller of the property had never met each other.

Given that the soon-tobe new owners of the land don’t wish to proceed with the reasoning, council opted to move the request to next month’s Planning Board meeting. That way, if the sale falls through for whatever reason the rezoning process can continue for Green Road Properties; but If the sale continues as expected the new owners can kill the request at their leisure.
