Capers women lose in tournament final

FREDERICTON - The Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team was defeated by the host New Brunswick Reds in the championship game of the Helen Campbell Memorial Tournament, presented by Stewart-McKelvey, Richard J. Currie Center on Sunday.

The Capers were downed 89-58.

Kylee Speedy had a gamehigh 26 points in the victory for the Reds, while Jayda Veinot had 15 points and Katie McAffee dropped 11 points.

Kiyara Letlow had a team-high 21 points for the Capers, while Mackenzee Ryan notched 12 points and Chermensa Van la par added 10 points.

Cape Breton secured their spot in the tournament final with a 64-57 win over McGill University of Montreal on Saturday. Statistics were not available at publication time.

Meanwhile, New Brunswick defeated Manitoba 96-76 to advance to the final. The Campbell tournament win was the Reds’ first since 2015 and fifth in the 22-year history of the event.

The Capers will be back in action next week when they host the Debbie Ruiz Memorial tournament.

The team will play Prince Edward Island, Windsor, and Mount Royal in the event. More information will be released in the coming days.
