Jets, Highlanders swept over weekend

SYDNEY - The Cape Breton Jets and Cabot Highlanders both fell victim to weekend losses in Nova Scotia Under-16 'AAA' Hockey League action.

The Jets dropped a pair of road games to the Moncton Thunderbirds.

Cape Breton was edged by Moncton 4-3 in overtime at the Jean-Louis Lévesque Arena in Moncton on Sunday.

Miguel Cormier, Nathan Breau, and André Léger netted goals in regulation time for the Thunderbirds (2-0-0-0). The overtime goal scorer was not provided by the league.

Brady Matheson scored twice, while Kyle Nearing chipped in with a single marker for the Jets (0-3-0-2).

Moncton's Nicolas Nowlan made 32 saves. Cape Breton's Andrew Shimon stopped 29 of 32 shots.

On Saturday, the Jets were grounded 9-2 by the Thunderbirds at the J.K. Irving Arena in Moncton.

Jacob Pineau scored twice and added an assist, while Colin Saulnier had two goals. Léger, Olivier LeBlanc, Kaleb Thomas, Zachary Guitard, and Tristan Richard chipped in with goals for the Thunderbirds. Matheson and Rory Mills replied with goals for the Jets.

Moncton's Gregory Gentleman made 26 saves. Cape Breton's Ethan Lewis stopped 38 of 47 shots.

Meanwhile, the Cabot Highlanders suffered a pair of losses to the Buccaneers of Chester and the Basin Armada of Bedford.

The Highlanders were downed 6-1 by the Armada at the HRM 4-Pad in Bedford on Sunday.

Ryan Walsh had a five-point performance, which included two goals, while Chris Brill had two goals and two assists. Jaxson Prior and Luc Pineau added single markers for the Armada (1-1-0-0).

Tyson MacNeil had the lone goal for the Highlanders (1-20-0). Basin's Janion Faulkner made 16 saves. Cabot's Manny Strong stopped 39 of 45 shots.

On Saturday, the Highlanders were downed 6-1 by the Buccaneers at the Eleanor Pew Memorial Arena in Chester.

Mack Bursey, Jesse Gillis, Carver Preston, James MacNeil, Sammy Cochrane, and Nolan Mackay each fired home goals for the Buccaneers (1-11-0). Josh Gillis had the only goal for the Highlanders.

Buccaneers' Ben MacDonald made 29 saves. Cabot's Oliver MacDonald stopped 38 of 44 shots.

The Jets will return home to play the Buccaneers at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre, while the Highlanders will host the Saint John Knights at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.
