National parks in Cape Breton to reopen

SYDNEY — After being forced to close due to damage caused by post-tropical storm Fiona, several Parks Canada sites are set to reopen to the public today.

People will be able to visit the following campgrounds, trails and facilities in Cape Breton Highlands National Park:

• Broad Cove campground

• Big Intervale Campground

• Cheticamp campground

• Fresh Water Lake & DUA & Playground

• Ingonish Beach DUA

• La Grande Falaise DUA

• La Rigouèche DUA & playground

• Acadian trail

• Bog trail

• Franey trail

• Freshwater Lake trail

• MacIntosh Brook day-use area/trail

• Middle Head day-use area/ trail

• Skyline trail (detour along back loop)

• Warren Lake trail

• Most scenic lookoffs on the Cabot Trail, with the exception of Lakies Head

The Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in Baddeck and the St. Peters Canal National Historic Site will also open.

Parks Canada reports that sections of the Cabot Trail have been cleared. Neils Harbour to Ingonish (Still Brook) has reopened to one lane with traffic lights and French Mountain has reopened to one lane with traffic lights.

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site remains closed as crews work to repair damage to buildings and fallen trees. Officials hope the fortress will reopen Oct. 10.
