Strong showing for Cape Breton athletes at Legion championship

SYDNEY — Cape Breton athletes represented Team Nova Scotia-Nunavut with strong showings at the Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Sherbrooke, Que., last weekend.

Ella Bottomley of Sydney finished fourth in the under18 female 800-metre race with a time of 2:14.41, only behind Kyla Martin of South Simcoe (2:10.41), Mandeep Sangha of Alberta (2:11.38), and Maya Baechler of British Columbia (2:12.98).

In the under-18 boys' high jump, Blake Marchand of Port Hawkesbury finished ninth with a jump of 1.80 metres. The winner was Levi Tuura of British Columbia with a 2.01-metre jump.

Meanwhile, in the under17 boys' 100-metre, Anthony Phillips of Sydney Mines finished in 19th place with a time of 11.53. The winner was Isaiah Luke of Flying Angel with a completion time of 10.88.

Phillips also placed ninth in the 4x100 under-18 boys relay with his team with a time of 44.58. Flying Angels Academy captured the top spot in the event at 41.93.

Ella Barry of Sydney and her team finished in sixth place in the 4x100 under-16 girls' relay with a time of 51.19. Quebec won the event with a time of 49.23.

In the shot put, Max Minihan of Sydney came in fifth place in the under-16 boys' division with a throw of 12.66 metres. Meanwhile, his brother, Owen Minihan of Sydney, came in seventh place in the under-18 boys' discus event with a throw of 40.25 metres.

As reported in the Cape Breton Post on Monday, Max Minihan took home the gold medal in the under-16 discus competition with a throw of 47.66 metres.

The Royal Canadian Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships will return to Sherbrooke in 2023. The event will be held Aug. 11-13 at the Université de Sherbrooke.
