NEW WATERFORD — The New Waterford Ball Hockey League’s inaugural season recently wrapped up with championship games being held at the New Waterford and District Community Centre.

The league, which featured 150 players through three divisions, began in June and wrapped up late last month with champions being crowned in the under9, under-11, and under-13-15 divisions.

“I’m extremely happy with the success of the program in its first year and already have big plans underway to improve and grow the program next season,” said league founder Skyler Peterson.

The league, which was opened to players across Cape Breton Island, hoped to begin play in 2021, however, was forced to cancel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with restrictions lifted in March, Peterson was able to organize the league in just over two months.

In the under-9 division, the Orange Sharks captured the league title, while the Yellow Sharks were victorious in claiming the under-11 division. The Red Sharks won the under-13-15 division of the league.

Peterson acknowledged the many sponsors that made the league a success including the New Waterford Kinsmen, Home Depot, Canadian Tire, Coca-Cola, and Rudderhams Source for Sports for donations ranging from gear, storage bins and Powerade.

He also noted the countless hours of dedication from all volunteers, coaches, officials and timekeepers for their efforts in making the first year memorable for the players.
