Breton Ability Centre CEO receives award

SYDNEY — Harman Singh, CEO of Breton Ability Centre, has been named as one of Canadian Immigrant Magazine’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants.

Singh is the only award recipient from Nova Scotia and one of only two recipients from the Maritime provinces.

“It’s incredibly humbling and an absolute honour to be recognized with this award,” Singh said in a release.

Singh moved to Canada in 1992 after graduating from Punjab University and has spent the past 20 years dedicating her professional focus to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities as a psychologist.

“It’s been my life’s passion to advocate for advancements in care in the disability support sector and it’s been my way of giving back to a country and community that has granted me so many opportunities,” she said.

Singh has been instrumental in shifting provincial and national policies and care models to influence a transformational change in how people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are supported.

As the CEO of Breton Ability Centre, she leads a team of more than 400 employees who help more than 100 individuals daily through an adult residential centre, 10 community homes and various outreach programs.

“Harman’s leadership has been instrumental in the transformation to a personcentred care model at Breton Ability Centre and throughout the entire province,” said Murray Ryan, chair of Breton Ability Centre’s board of directors.

“She leads with heart and is a trailblazer for the disability sector – both as a clinician and an advocate.”

Singh has presented at numerous national and international conferences and received the Tom Miller Human Rights Award in 2021.

She was also a finalist for the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Rose Schwartz Business Woman of the Year Award.
