Vigil to honour victims of violence

SYDNEY — Victims of domestic violence in Cape Breton will be remembered during a vigil on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Established in 1991, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women marks the anniversary of the 1989 massacre of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique

de Montréal.

Every Woman's Centre in Sydney will host the annual vigil beginning at 7 p.m. on Monday. A candle-lighting ceremony will be held to remember victims of domestic violence in Cape Breton.

Karen Bernard, executive director of the Jane Paul Indigenous Women's Centre, will be the guest speaker.

Local high schools are invited to send one or two students to represent victims and Nova Scotia Community College Marconi students will also offer support.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the service has very limited space. Registration, proof of vaccination and masks are required.

The vigil will also be streamed live on the Every Woman's Centre Facebook page.
