Lynx lose heartbreaker in overtime

NEW GLASGOW — The Cape Breton Lynx fell short in their quest for the Sobeys Cup in Pictou County on Sunday.

The Membertou-based Lynx were edged 2-1 by the host Northern Subway Selects in the championship game at the Pictou County Wellness Centre in New Glasgow.

Josie Dunn had the goal in regulation time for the Selects, while Sarah Fraser potted the winner.

Sam Morrison had the lone goal for the Lynx.

In the tournament semifinal earlier in the day, Cape Breton downed the Halifax Western Capitals 5-2.

Morrison had two goals, while Kameryn Lahey, Maira Pino and Catherine Chiasson added single markers for the Lynx.

Goal scorers were not available for the Western Capitals.

Cape Breton went 2-0-1 in round-robin play. The team defeated the Bussey Auto Broker Penguins 4-1 on Friday, before taking down the

EDZA Reds of Fredericton 2-1 on Saturday. The club also tied the Central Storm of Prince Edward Island 2-2.

Cape Breton will return to Maritime Major Female Under-18 Major Hockey League action next weekend when they travel to New Brunswick. The team will be in Fredericton to play the Reds on Saturday at 5 p.m., and Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
