Wildcats advance to semifinals

CAPE BRETON POST

SYDNEY — The Sydney Academy Wildcats are heading to the School Sport Nova Scotia Division 2 football provincial semifinal.

The Wildcats advanced to the final four with a 21-2 victory over the Horton Griffins of Wolfville at Open Hearth Park in Sydney, Saturday.

The Wildcats opened the game's scoring on their first offensive drive of the day with quarterback Garrett Mofford connecting with slot receiver Cailen Davis-Paul for a 54-yard touchdown. DavisPaul and Mofford connected once again for a 56-yard major in the second quarter to increase the home teams lead to 14-0.

Davis-Paul upped Sydney's lead once again when he picked off the Griffins' quarterback and returned it 60 yards for his third touchdown of the day. Mofford converted the extra point on all Wildcats touchdowns to give Sydney a 21-0 halftime lead.

In a back-and-forth second half neither team were able to generate much. The only scoring came when the Wildcats stalled deep in their own end with two minutes to play elected to give up a safety to the Horton defence.

Defensively for the Wildcats, Ryder Hennick had two interceptions while DavisPaul had a pick six and Daniel Nichols had six tackles.

The semifinal game is slated for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Open Hearth Park. The team's opponent was not available at press time.
