Bus crash involved Cape Bretoners

SYDNEY — A bus carrying the Miramichi Timberwolves was involved in a fatal collision Sunday morning in New Brunswick.

The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on Highway 8.

Two Inverness County hockey players — Liam Trenholm of Port Hood and Kenzie MacPhail of Inverness — are members of the Timberwolves team along with former Cape Breton Eagles Jacob Santerre and Matthew Gordon.

The Cape Breton Post could not confirm if the players were on the bus at the time of the incident.

In a statement, the Maritime Junior Hockey League confirmed the collison happened in Astle while the team was on its way to play the Fredericton Red Wings.

The driver of the motor vehicle was killed in the accident. The name of the driver was not released at press time and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The league said those on the bus sustained limited injuries and grief counsellors were provided to offer assistance. Further counselling and support will be offered, as requested.
