Accused to have bail hearing

SYDNEY — An Eskasoni man is slated for a bail hearing today after being charged with multiple breach offences.

Jonathan Lindsay Paul, 41, is charged with eight counts of breaching a court order and single a single count of possession of ammunition while prohibited. The incidents are alleged to have occurred Oct. 29 in Membertou.

Paul is prohibited from being in the community of Membertou and having contact with Chief Terry Paul and his council. He and his wife, Ashley, were ordered to leave the community by the council after repeated criminal charges, including drug trafficking.

Also, Jonathan Paul was charged with uttering threats against Chief Paul and council for which he received a 12-month probation period. He was on probation at the time of the most recent offences.

He was also charged with libel involving two councillors from Eskasoni for which he agreed to sign a peace bond and have no contact with the councillors.

The new breach charges against Paul allege contact with Chief Paul and members of his council along with being in possession of ammunition.

The new charges stem from an incident in Membertou last week when the council went to enforce its order to have Ashley Paul leave the community.

The band council’s decision for eviction was recently upheld by a Supreme Court order.
